Mining and mineral processing convey highly abrasive slurries and solids — mineral slurries, tailings, concentrates and backfill. Wear concentrates where flow changes direction and where solids travel at speed, so pipe, elbow and tee selection must follow the actual operating conditions rather than a single material rule.

Conveyed media

Typical media include mineral slurries, tailings, concentrates and backfill, as well as mineral fines and tailings slurry. These combine fine and coarse solids with abrasive particles that erode the inner wall over time.

Where wear concentrates

Wear is generally highest at changes of direction — elbows, bends and tees — and along high-velocity straight runs. The pattern depends on particle size, velocity, impact angle and solids concentration, so the right product is a matter of evaluation, not an automatic selection.

Products to consider

Bimetal pipes for severe abrasion with moderate impact; SHS ceramic composite pipes for high abrasion at low impact; induction-hardened pipes for high abrasion with controlled impact; weld overlay pipes where the duty calls for an alloy matched to the wear mode; alumina ceramic-lined pipes for fine solids and slurries; and 16Mn steel pipes for general slurry and bulk transfer. Each is evaluated against your specific conditions.
