Chemical Industry

Chemical and process duties combine abrasion with corrosion — slurries, process dust and abrasive media that attack the pipe wall chemically as well as mechanically. Suitability depends on the chemical properties of the conveyed medium and on product purity requirements, not on wear resistance alone.

Conveyed media

Typical media include abrasive slurries and process dust, together with whatever corrosive constituents they carry — acids, alkalis, chlorides and scaling. Where a stream is both abrasive and corrosive, the two have to be described separately, because each drives a different part of the selection.

Where wear concentrates

Wear is generally highest where the flow changes direction — elbows, bends and tees — and along high-velocity straight runs. Corrosion is not confined to those points, so selection has to consider both mechanisms together rather than reading wear resistance on its own.

Products to consider

Bimetal pipes, where the high-chromium cast iron lining brings corrosion resistance alongside abrasion resistance; SHS ceramic composite pipes, whose ceramic layer resists acids, alkalis, seawater and scaling. Final selection depends on the specific medium and its chemical properties.
